Nelson Saibo is Principal Investigator at ITQB NOVA (Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier, NOVA University), Portugal. He was awarded his PhD in Sciences: Plant Biotechnology by the University of Ghent, Belgium. Nelson Saibo has two main areas of research, (1) understanding crop tolerance to different abiotic stresses (e.g. drought, salinity, cold) and (2) molecular mechanisms underlying photosynthetic efficiency. Using rice as a model to study abiotic stress responses in cereals and maize as a highly efficient photosynthetic (C4) plant, he has been working on the functional characterization of master transcription factors, cis-elements, and other key players regulating abiotic stress responses and photosynthetic performance.
